What is an Area Calculator?

An Area Calculator is a versatile tool that helps you calculate the area of various geometric shapes and convert between different units of measurement. This calculator supports:

  • 7 Geometric Shapes: Rectangle, Square, Circle, Triangle, Trapezoid, Ellipse, and Parallelogram
  • Room/House Mode: Add multiple rooms to calculate total floor area
  • 12 Output Units: Including Indian units like Gaj, Marla, and Bigha
  • Cost Estimation: Calculate flooring, tiling, or painting costs based on area
  • Quick Conversions: Instantly see area in sq ft, sq m, sq yd, and acres

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the area of an irregularly shaped room?
For irregular shapes, divide the room into regular shapes (rectangles, triangles, etc.), calculate each area separately, then add them together. Our Room/House mode lets you add multiple rectangular rooms. For L-shaped rooms, add two rectangles. For rooms with cut corners, calculate the full rectangle and subtract the corner area.
What's the difference between Gaj, Marla, and Bigha?
Gaj is equal to 1 square yard (9 sq ft). Marla equals approximately 272.25 sq ft or about 9 sq yards (though it varies by region). Bigha is a larger unit used for agricultural land and varies significantly by state — from about 1,500 sq m in Bengal to 2,500+ sq m in UP/Bihar. Always confirm local definitions when dealing with land transactions.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply square feet by 0.0929 to get square meters. For example, 1000 sq ft × 0.0929 = 92.9 sq m. Conversely, multiply square meters by 10.764 to get square feet. Our calculator does this automatically — just select your input and output units.
How much flooring do I need for my room?
Calculate your room area using this calculator, then add 5-10% extra for cutting waste and future repairs. For example, if your room is 150 sq ft, order 165-165 sq ft of flooring material. Use the cost calculator feature to estimate total flooring expenses.
What's the carpet area vs built-up area of a flat?
Carpet area is the actual usable floor space (what you can put carpet on). Built-up area includes carpet area plus wall thicknesses and balconies. Super built-up area adds common areas like lobbies and stairs. Typically: Carpet Area × 1.15-1.25 = Built-up Area × 1.25-1.35 = Super Built-up Area.
How many tiles do I need for a room?
First, calculate room area in sq ft. Then divide by the tile area. For example, for a 100 sq ft room using 2×2 ft tiles (4 sq ft each): 100 ÷ 4 = 25 tiles. Add 10% for wastage = 28 tiles. Use our calculator to find the room area and cost calculator to estimate total tile cost.
How accurate is this area calculator?
This calculator uses standard mathematical formulas and is highly accurate for the precision of your input measurements. For real-world applications (construction, flooring, etc.), accuracy depends on how precisely you measure the dimensions. We recommend measuring multiple times and using the average for best results.
