Why does asphalt density matter?

Tonnage is volume multiplied by density. Mix design and compaction change density, so the plant or paving contractor's value produces the best order estimate.

Should I enter loose or compacted thickness?

Enter the required finished compacted thickness. The relationship between loose placement and compacted thickness should be confirmed with the contractor.

Is a 145 lb/ft³ density exact?

No. It is an editable planning default. Actual asphalt mix density varies, and supplier data should replace it when available.

Does this calculate the aggregate base?

No. Calculate base material separately because its depth and density differ from the asphalt surface.

Tons = area × compacted thickness × density ÷ 2,000

Thickness is converted from inches to feet before volume is multiplied by compacted density. The default density is a planning value and should be replaced with the mix supplier's figure.

Worked example

A 50 × 10 ft area at 2 inches compacted thickness contains 83.33 ft³. At 145 lb/ft³, the estimate is about 6.04 US tons before allowance.
