Use non-overlapping horizontal rectangles with a uniform pitch in each. Include both sides of a gable only once. Shape labels do not calculate intersections or subtract dormer openings. Quantity repeats identical sections.

Build one transparent roofing project
Most calculator pages treat a roof as one number. This workspace lets you separate a main roof, garage, addition or matching dormers, assign the correct pitch to each section and then combine them into one auditable material order.
A roof system uses more than field shingles. The workspace estimates shingles and underlayment by area, then uses linear measurements for starter, ridge cap and drip edge. Every packaged result rounds up independently.
Coverage fields are editable because products differ. Use net installed coverage from the current wrapper or technical data sheet, after required laps and overlaps. The report is a planning list, not a substitute for field verification, a roof plan, code review or manufacturer instructions.

How to use this calculator
- 1Name the project and add one rectangular section for each footprint and pitch.
- 2Enter footprint dimensions, overhangs and x/12 pitch for every section.
- 3Choose a waste allowance appropriate for the layout and material.

- 5Measure eaves, rakes, ridges and hips in linear feet.

Common mistakes
- • Combining mixed-pitch additions into one section.
- • Using nominal roll size instead of net installed coverage.
- • Using roof area to estimate products sold by linear coverage.
- • Rounding the combined order instead of each package type.
- • Assuming flashing, ventilation or ice-barrier requirements are universal.

Main roof plus a lower-pitch garage
