What is CTC (Cost to Company)?

CTC Calculation Formula & Breakdown

📐 CTC Components Formula

Basic Salary = CTC × Basic % (typically 40-60%)

HRA = Basic × HRA % (typically 40-50%)

Employer PF = min(Basic/12, ₹15,000) × 12% × 12

Bonus = CTC × Bonus % (if applicable)

Special Allowance = Gross - Basic - HRA

Total CTC = Basic + HRA + Special Allowance + Employer PF + Bonus

💡 Example: ₹12 LPA CTC Breakdown

Given:

• Annual CTC: ₹12,00,000

• Basic: 50% = ₹6,00,000

• HRA: 50% of Basic = ₹3,00,000

• Employer PF: ₹21,600 (12% of ₹15K × 12)

Calculation:

Gross = CTC - Employer PF = ₹12,00,000 - ₹21,600 = ₹11,78,400

Special Allowance = ₹11,78,400 - ₹6,00,000 - ₹3,00,000 = ₹2,78,400

Employee PF = ₹21,600

Income Tax (New Regime) = ~₹81,734

Professional Tax (MH) = ₹2,500

Result:

Annual Take-Home: ₹10,72,566

Monthly In-Hand: ₹89,381

(89.4% of CTC = Take-home)

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is CTC and how is it calculated?

CTC (Cost to Company) is the total annual expenditure a company incurs for an employee:

Formula:

CTC = Gross Salary + Employer PF + Bonus + Perks

Gross = Basic + HRA + Special Allowance + Other Allowances

Example: If Basic = ₹6L, HRA = ₹3L, Special = ₹2.78L, Employer PF = ₹21.6K, then CTC = ₹12L

2. How much in-hand salary will I get from my CTC?

In-hand salary depends on deductions. Typically:

Low CTC (₹3-6L)

~90-95% of CTC

Lower tax burden

Mid CTC (₹6-15L)

~85-90% of CTC

Moderate taxes

High CTC (₹15L+)

~75-85% of CTC

Higher tax bracket

Use our calculator above for exact calculation with your specific CTC and settings.

3. What CTC should I ask for if I want ₹1 lakh/month in-hand?

Use our In-Hand to CTC calculator (reverse calculator) for exact answer!

Quick Estimate:

• Desired Monthly: ₹1,00,000

• Annual In-Hand: ₹12,00,000

• Required CTC: ₹14-15 Lakhs (approximately)

💡 Pro Tip: Use our calculator's "In-Hand to CTC" mode for precise calculation based on your state, tax regime, and salary structure!

4. What's the difference between CTC, Gross, and Net Salary?

CTC (Cost to Company)

Total cost to employer = All salary components + Employer contributions

Example: ₹12L (includes everything)

Gross Salary

CTC - Employer PF - Bonus (if not monthly)

Example: ₹11.78L (what's used to calculate in-hand)

Net/Take-Home Salary

Gross - Employee PF - Income Tax - Professional Tax

Example: ₹10.72L annual or ₹89K/month (what you actually get)

5. Is Employer PF part of my salary or CTC?

Employer PF is part of CTC but NOT part of your in-hand salary.

What it is:

• Employer contributes 12% of your basic (max ₹15,000/month)

• Goes directly to your PF account

• Part of CTC but reduces gross salary

Example:

CTC = ₹12L, Basic = ₹6L

Employer PF = 12% of ₹15K × 12 = ₹21,600

Gross = ₹12L - ₹21.6K = ₹11.78L

💰 Good News: Your total PF is 24% (12% employer + 12% employee) which helps in retirement savings!
