What is Overtime (OT) Pay in India?

Overtime pay is additional compensation paid to employees for working beyond their regular working hours. In India, as per the Factories Act, 1948 and various state labor laws, employees are entitled to overtime pay at twice the normal rate (2x) for extra hours worked.

Our calculator supports daily, weekly, and monthly overtime calculations with multipliers like 2x (normal/weekly off/holiday) and 2.5x (night shift). It works for both salaried and hourly employees, complying with Indian labor regulations.

  2. 2Choose employee type (Salaried or Hourly)
  3. 3Enter salary details (Basic + DA + Allowances) or hourly wage

Overtime Pay Calculation Formula (India)

📐 Basic OT Formula (Salaried Employees)

Step 1: Hourly Rate = (Basic + DA + Other Allowances) ÷ Total Monthly Hours

Step 2: OT Rate = Hourly Rate × Multiplier (2x or 2.5x)

Step 3: OT Pay = OT Hours × OT Rate

* Total Monthly Hours = Working Days × 8 hours (typically 26 × 8 = 208 hours)

💡 Example Calculation

Given:

• Basic Salary: ₹50,000/month

• DA: ₹5,000/month

• Working Days: 26 days

• OT Hours: 10 hours

• Multiplier: 2x

Calculation:

Hourly Rate = (₹50,000 + ₹5,000) ÷ (26 × 8) = ₹55,000 ÷ 208 = ₹264.42/hr

OT Rate = ₹264.42 × 2 = ₹528.85/hr

OT Pay = 10 × ₹528.85 = ₹5,288.50

🕒 For Hourly Employees

OT Pay = OT Hours × Hourly Wage × Multiplier

Example: 5 OT hours × ₹250/hr × 2 = ₹2,500 OT pay
